Day 19 (Thurs.) United Federation of Planets

On Wednesday, I got caught up on some class work and reading after class. Sat outside on our hotel's patio and listened to the birds.
Thursday after class I rushed back to my hotel because Matt arrived!! He had a good flight over, pretty uneventful.
In the afternoon, we went with a couple people to the United Nations office here in Vienna! The entrance was a bit hard to find, as there is a lot of construction going on, but once you got inside and through security, it was very impressive! There's one point where you technically leave Austrian land and are in international territory. It's a unique perspective seeing this one organization pulling all of these countries together for the betterment of humanity. It made me think of Star Trek and the United Federation of Planets. I'm such a geek. However, Star Trek was on to something...they were the first to use Skype!
Joy, Celeste, Marilyn, Me, and Matt in front of a memorial to the people who risk their lives or have given their lives for the UN initiatives.

The flags are in alphabetical order

A typical conference room. Each chair has a set of headphones for interpreters. There are 6 main languages for the UN translations: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and German. Translators sit in boxes above the conference room and translate live. Depending on the combination, sometimes there are two simultaneous translations at the same time!

The rotunda where they display several galleries of artwork. There is a dedication to space travel on the walls.

This is an interesting display of information on human trafficking and how the UN is trying to stop it.

A great monument in honor of woman's emancipation.
